Welcome to the Scores on the Board™ system — a simple, powerful method for building and improving any skill.

This five-part system is used in two ways:

Set up:
Define your skill parameters and start the process.

Ongoing use:
Run it continuously to improve your skill.

Part 1: Vision

Create a Vision

Setup:

  • Start by imagining what perfect performance looks like for the skill you’re building.
  • Keep it simple and memorable — just 15 words or less.
  • Work with a coach if you can, and display your vision somewhere you’ll see it often.

Ongoing Use:

  • Use your vision as your benchmark.
  • Refer back to it regularly, and refine it over time as your understanding deepens

Part 2: Goal

Select a Goal Area

Setup:

  • Break the skill into its key parts. Choose one specific area that will make the biggest difference right now.
  • Make sure it’s something you can observe and measure.

Ongoing Use:

  • At the end of each cycle, ask yourself — is this still the right area to focus on?
  • Shift your focus only when you’ve made solid progress.

Part 3: Feedback

Get Feedback

Setup:

  • Ask people you trust to give you a score out of 10 on your performance in the goal area.
  • Always ask, “What would I need to do to score a 10?”
  • Record what they say — the scores and the suggestions.

Ongoing Use:

  • Get feedback after every improvement cycle.
  • Look for trends, track progress, and stay open. Feedback is a tool — not a verdict.

Part 4: Gaps

Identify Gaps

Setup:

  • Compare your feedback score to your goal or vision. The difference is your gap.
  • With your coach, identify the causes — but only focus on what you can control.
  • Choose one or two key gaps to work on.

Ongoing Use:

  • Reassess your gaps each time you get new feedback.
  • Are you closing the gap? Or has something new emerged? Let the data guide you.

Part 5: Actions

Take Action

Setup:

  • Create a short action plan targeting your biggest gap.
  • Keep your actions simple, specific, and time-bound.
  • Include practice or repetition where possible, and track your progress.

Ongoing Use:

  • After each cycle, review your results.
  • Did your actions work? If not, adjust them.
  • Each cycle of action brings you closer to your vision.
