Part 4: Gaps

Personal Skill Development

Purpose: To understand the difference between your current performance and your ideal performance, and focus only on what you can change.

Once you’ve received feedback on your performance in your goal area, it’s time to compare it with your vision and goal. This is called a gap analysis.

Setup: How to Do a Gap Analysis

Once you’ve received feedback on your performance in your goal area, it’s time to compare it with your vision and goal. This is called a gap analysis.

Look at the score or comments you received and compare them to the target level you set in your goal. The difference between the two is your current performance gap.

With your coach, discuss what factors may be causing this gap. Look at habits, skills, mindset, preparation — anything that may be limiting your performance.

Focus only on the issues within your control. External or unchangeable factors should be noted, but not included in your plan of action.

Don’t try to fix everything at once. Choose the gaps that, if addressed, will make the biggest difference to your progress.

Ongoing Use: How to Use Gaps for Continuous Learning

Each time you receive new feedback, repeat the gap analysis. Is the gap closing? Are new ones emerging?

Keep notes or charts showing how your performance gaps are shrinking or shifting. This provides a clear picture of improvement and helps maintain motivation.

A gap is not a failure — it’s a focus area. Use it constructively to plan your next steps.
